  • Dan Bergevin - Recycled? No problem!I for one am the opposite of the people who read this and, as fans of Tufte's other works, felt let down. There seem to be a lot of complaints about recycled material. Yes, a lot of stuff in here is found in his other books. Yes, his whole Cognitive Style of PowerPoint pamphlet is reproduced here (I think?). No, I don't think that's a problem and in fact I think this is his best work ever.

I once owned Tufte's other three books, but sold them. They had no use to me, I found them to be a bit too... fluffy. But I picked up Beautiful Evidence and thought I had struck gold. A lot of his great ideas are concentrated, and yeah there's some fluff but he saves it for the end, where it belongs. I have actually put this book to serious, heavy use, which I cannot say for any of Tufte's other works.

Is this review helpful to all of you possible buyers? Probably not. If you loved his other works, you are likely to feel some disappointment at spending forty five bucks or so on stuff you already have. But if you didn't like Tufte before (and I know there's plenty of you out there) you might find a reason to now. It seems as if this is Tufte's way of streamlining his really good ideas for maximum usage. With a little fluff tossed in, of course.
  • Penelope - Yet another rave review for this bookI thought I should add my voice to the chorus of people who have been helped tremendously by the ideas in this book. I have ulcerative colitis which has become progressively worse over the years, helped along by an increase in the stress of the jobs I was taking on. I was getting sick for months at a time, multiple times a year, and felt so tired, in pain, and had such a foggy mind - not to mention the frequent, painful trips to the toilet.

After a scare this year, being threatened with either losing my colon sometime soon, or going on to much higher-risk medication, I have been implementing the principles underlying this diet whilst sticking to my old lower-risk medication (Pentasa). I haven't even been following the diet rigidly, but I've been totally well for 6 months now and can function effectively in my work. All I've done is cut out all lactose and most starchy carbohydrates, and cut down on sugars. I don't have a constant desire to lie down and sleep, and I would say I now have fewer GI problems than a healthy person. My gastroenterologist is very happy with the results, having recently done a colonoscopy on me that found that my colon is now perfectly fine. She is now reading the book herself, as she's heard quite a few recommendations from her patients.

This diet may not work for everyone but if you have a choice between scary possibilities (high-risk medication, extreme surgery, eventual bowel cancer) or a little self-restraint and denial (avoiding some foods you might like), then the choice to me is clear. Everyone with these sorts of problems should at least TRY the ideas in this book, down to the letter, for at least a month, and see how they go.

Update 18 June 2010: Still healthy and symptom free 1.5 years later... that is amazing considering my previous history of getting sick at least once every 3 months. :)
  • Kevin "Revolution" - Works great with Mac Lion. Fast download & installation.I was one of those that bought the new Apple Mac Book Pro computer with the Lion program on it. Anyone who has that is aware that you're previous Microsoft Office program on your earlier Mac Computer is no longer compatible with the Lion update. This proved frustrated for consumers on all levels. This was due to Microsoft not getting with the program and offering a free update to upgrade on your Mac Lion.

Still - Apple did not help matters any when Microsoft Office 2011 proved to be an efficient download onto Mac Lion computers. Apple is one of the top money making corporation in the world they should've offered the Microsoft 2011 upgrade to all it's Lion customers. In fact, it should already be part of the Mac Lion programs contained on the computer. They are cheap and that was very clearly established when they did nothing to rectify the situation, but try to pawn the iPages program on their customers instead. Sorry no one uses iPages and exporting each and every document to a Microsoft Word program is a "pain in the...you know what".

This was the cheapest listing I found for Microsoft Office. I was hesitant as it was a download and worried that it might not work. It says it can take 5 hours to download, but it was much quicker for me. I hit the download button and began the process of installing onto my Apple Mac Book Pro computer with Lion on it. About 20 minutes in it asks for the download key which you should be able to locate in your email. Make sure you have it down somewhere as it will ask for that to complete the download which took another 10 minutes. In about 30 minutes Microsoft Office was up and running like a breeze on my computer with no issues or bugs or anything. It's perfect and I have no complaints. Highly recommend this.
  • Sarah Nieman - can't wait for moreThis series meets all my reading needs: long enough that I am not finished before it really gets going, intrique, danger and love. The element of the time travel is believable and makes for a more intriguing and breath-holding story. I have learned a lot about history as I have looked up the timelines and read about other things happening at the same time. I am already 2 books ahead of this one and they haven't let me down yet. Don't stop now. They get better and better!
