- Tenor Jon - An Academic and Affirming Approach!Brownson does a beautiful job presenting a solidly academic work that shows--dare I say more convincingly than Dr. R. Gagnon ever has--a historical and theological approach to the Scriptures that not only dissembles the standard non-affirming/conservative arguments against non-heterosexual relationships but constructs a theologically-sound framework upon which a theology of sexuality can be built that is God-glorifying while maintaining an affirming stance toward those who identify outside of the heteronormative ("one man, one woman") definition of relationships.
It truly is a must-read for those interested in learning about academically- and theologically-sound approaches to the human experience as it interacts with Scripture. Is it possible to live "under the authority of Scripture" while being a gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or otherwise non-heterosexual? Brownson's arguments not only deconstruct arguments that have been used by theologians like Dr. Robert Gagnon, but it presents historical facts alongside theological paradigms for reading the Bible that make it difficult to stay loyal to a non-affirming theology. Brownson demonstrates that, while dominated by heteronormative language, it does not actually *require* a heterosexual lifestyle. He takes arguments discussing complementarity of gender and avoidance of "too much sameness" and presents them from a Biblical and historical paradigm that make them moot and even unreasonable.
What I find most interesting is that Brownson comes from a relatively conservative background, namely the Reformed Church in America. Admittedly, he is a liberal among his denominational peers, but he is working within a tradition that struggles to hear this paradigm-shifting and culture-altering perspective on Scripture. He presents the material in a way that is logical but firm in its message: The discussion on sexuality within the Church needs to pay attention to the details and cannot make assumptions about what it "knows" to be correct.
Great book. Highly recommend it for those who are trying to find something to compare with (or refute!)
