It follows Edmond on so many new adventures, the least of him being imprisoned wrongly for fifteen years. He is taken away from his wedding feast on the eve of marrying Mercedes. Nobody knows where he is except the culprits who put him there.
He meets a kind abbe' and they devise a plan to escape. Everyone thinks the abbe' is mad because he rambles on about a treasure that he has, but Edmond learns that he is for real. He eventually escapes and finds the treasure on the island of Monte Cristo, where he takes on the name, The Count of Monte Cristo. He becomes a pirate and smuggler to get to the island and use the map the abbe' had drawn for him.
He becomes a master of disguise and sets out to get even with the bad men who put him in prison. No one, not even good friends, recognize him so he has a lot of wiggle room. One by one, he takes care of each one of them, even though he sometimes feels a little guilty.
Lots of new characters in this one that will keep you going and many story lines during this part. Way too many to write in this review.
He finds out that Mercedes has married one of those men, that his father has died and he had an ally on the outside, trying to help him over the years. Eventually, he in turn, helps him out.
Many new friends, and enemies, are made in Paris. He meets Mercedes and finds that the love he once had for her is still there, even though she does not recognize him at first. He befriends her son and the story lines just keep coming. He falls in love with another woman as well...Haydee. She and Mercedes continue to be part of the ongoing story.
Remember, this is the real story as told by Sherlock Holmes so if you have read the original this one will be a treat.
This book is full of suspense and many surprises. Do not miss out on it or you will not understand the stories that follow.
